HR Transforming Zambia’s Progress: Boosting Economic Growth and Bettering Lives – ZIHRM Conference Reflections

I attended the HR Conference in Livingstone representing Klapton Re, where the central theme focused on “HR Transforming Zambia’s Progress: Boosting Economic Growth and Bettering Lives.” The discussions centred on redefining HR as a key driver of human capital development and organizational progress.

One of the key takeaways for me was the emphasis on the role HR plays in creating peaceful, productive, and motivating work environments. There was strong emphasis on the idea that organizations cannot truly progress when employees are unhappy or disengaged. HR therefore has a responsibility not only to drive productivity and workplace efficiency, but also to promote dignity, security, employee well-being, and quality of life within the workplace.

The Government’s pronouncement on the 24-hour economy was also discussed, particularly the impact this may have on workplaces and workforce management in Zambia. It was noted that nearly 40% of the global economy remains active while other regions are asleep, highlighting the growing need for organizations to become more agile, adaptable, and responsive in the way work is structured and managed.

Another interesting discussion focused on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it is reshaping Human Resources. AI is increasingly being integrated into areas such as recruitment, performance management, workforce analytics, and employee engagement. At the same time, there was recognition that while technology is transforming the workplace, the human element of HR remains critical and cannot be overlooked.

The conference also highlighted several key workplace pillars that organizations should continue to strengthen, namely workforce planning, talent management, organizational design, employee health and well-being, and legal compliance, all of which are essential for sustainable growth and long-term organizational success.
